Elaine had already been through a lot. She was still coming to terms with the recent loss of her husband when her brother Brian became seriously unwell with kidney failure. He was nearing the end of his life, and Elaine stepped in to support him — cooking, cleaning, driving him to appointments, and trying to make sense of a system she’d never had to deal with before.
They applied for a Home Care Package, but nothing moved quickly. There were forms. Delays. More questions. And the whole time, Brian still needed care. They were doing their best, juggling everything — even moving between Elaine’s home and Brian’s to manage the logistics of care and medical appointments. It was overwhelming, and at times, it felt impossible.
That’s when Mingary Care stepped in.
We started by providing one week of support — a twice weekly personal care visit and a few key pieces of equipment to make things easier at home. A toilet seat frame. A shower stool. A wheelie walker. No fuss. No complicated forms. Just what was needed, when it was needed.
And when the wait for formal services kept dragging on, Mingary Care kept showing up. One week became five — calm, consistent help that took the pressure off.
“Mingary Care was a blessing,” Elaine said. “They were so uncomplicated. No long forms. They just turned up, did the work, and didn’t ask a bunch of unnecessary questions. It was so easy.”
Even when the Home Care Package was finally approved, it didn’t quite fit their situation. There was still more paperwork. More assessments. And because Brian was spending time in both homes, some services couldn’t be delivered where and when he needed them — if at all.
Brian died not long after the package was activated. But by then, the support that mattered had already been there — delivered and paid for by Mingary Care.
Elaine now shares her story because she wants more people to know this kind of help exists — the kind that shows up, quietly and kindly, when care can’t wait.
