The board and Managing Director of Sunshine Hospice wish to clarify that the closure of Katie Rose Cottage in Doonan is not in any way connected to its business, Sunshine Hospice Ltd.

An experienced hospice operator, Sunshine Hospice has recently achieved significant milestones towards building the coast’s first ever purpose-built community hospice.

  • Three years of fundraising, with 200 volunteers working across 4 op shops.
  • Architecture designed plans for a six-bed, 24/7 residential hospice.
  • Entered into contract to purchase 6100m2 of land at 7-15 Illuka Street, Buderim (Announced May 2019).
  • Consultation within the community.
  • Development application lodged with Sunshine Coast Council (22 May 2019).

Putting the fun in fundraising

Sunshine Hospice is planning a major fundraising event, ‘Hang ya boss out to dry’, to be held on Saturday 10 August 2019 in conjunction with HiReach Rentals Australia.

The fundraiser will involve local bosses being placed in scissor lifts with their phones and raised high in the sky. Their goal is to make calls and secure enough donation pledges to be let back down!

Come and watch the bosses working the phones!

About the new hospice

Sunshine Hospice Board Chairman, Frank Lewins said “The purpose built hospice will be a quiet place: architecturally designed and surrounded by natural bushland and landscaped areas, providing a tranquil environment for patients. We encourage the community to support this major fundraising event.”

When asked about sustainability, Dr Lewins said “In a similar way to other accredited and licensed hospices in Queensland, we will be sustained by a range of funding sources including our own community fundraising, private health funds, Department of Veterans’ Affairs and government.

Dr Lewins said all design and planning work will meet building licensing requirements for a private health facility. The facility will also be accredited, ensuring high quality, residential palliative care.”
